Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the top model) they utilize smart mapping to create detailed floorplans that avoid obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also have carpet boost, a feature which boosts the robot's power when it detects a lot of dirt on the carpet to get it cleaned up quickly.
The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests on floors that were bare, and they are particularly adept in cleaning dog hair. They do have some flaws, however, that prevent them from being our top option. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to become stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. Also, it doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.
It's still a great deal for those whose home or office has lots of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. Plus, it's very quiet and can work when you're at work or school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. This Web page 's also less effective at mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it has vacuumed. This is something we haven't seen before on other robot vacuum/mop combination.
3. iRobot Roomba X40
This mop and vacuum combination is sleek and has a circular look that looks more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the competitors. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).
It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.
The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has a simple mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a problem in the mornings before work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.
It's also quite expensive however, not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing with a little more noise and some additional cost this is a efficient two-in-one device that should satisfy most people.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features to help you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes charge of both mopping and vacuuming. It comes with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, cleans and dry its mop pads.
The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, though this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.
Its vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house according to the amount of dirt they tend to be.
For larger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your home via the app or voice controls. If you have lots of furniture, a stair-mode is also a good option. For busy families, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off can be very beneficial.
5. iRobot Roomba RX3
The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you would think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with only one pad and a rotating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the mop cleaners with robots that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.
The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to set up the spot-cleaning. It can also be used to it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for greater efficiency.
